TECHNIC AUTO CAR: การใช้ but

but มีความหมายว่า "แต่...."
ใช้ในการเชื่อม ข้อความที่มีความหมาย ขัดแย้งกัน
อาจใช้เชื่อมข้อความใน ประโยคเดียวกัน หรือในประโยคก่อนหน้า ก็ได้
ความรู้เบื่้องต้น
ในการใช้ but ยังมีอีกหลายความหมาย ดังตัวอย่างต่อไปนี้

- But why me? = แต่ทำไมต้องเป็นผม
- anything but = นอกจาก.../ ยกเว้น....
- nothing but = ไม่มีอะไร นอกจาก...
- No offense, but... = ไม่ได้ว่าอะไรนะ... แต่ว่า
- not only…, but also... = ไม่เพียงแต่...เท่านั้นแต่ยัง... อีกด้วย
- You talk the talk, but don’t walk the walk. ดีแต่พูด ไม่ยอมทำ

การใช้ but เชื่อมประโยค จะต้องมีจุลภาค (comma) คั่นก่อนเสมอ
แต่ถ้าข้อความก่อน but ไม่ยาวมาก ก็สามารถละ จุลภาคได้
- I’m tired but I’ll keep studying.
- I’m tired, but I’ll keep studying.
ฉันเหนื่อย แต่ฉันก็จะเรียนต่อ
(สามารถเขียนได้ทั้งสองแบบ)

หรือ

anything but = ทุกอย่างนอกจาก.../ ยกเว้น....

- I will do anything but this.

- He didn't speak anything but English.

nothing but = ไม่มีอะไร นอกจาก...

- She does nothing but cry.

- He is mean and respects nothing but power.

- He was a hard man who loved nothing but money.
เขาเป็นคนที่ไม่ชอบอะไรนอกจากเงิน

not only…, but also... = ไม่เพียงแต่...เท่านั้นแต่ยัง... อีกด้วย

- Yet spoiled food not only creates health risks but also economic losses.
อาหารที่บูดไม่เพียง แต่สร้างความเสี่ยงต่อสุขภาพ แต่ยังทำให้เสียเงินอีก

- This means not only brushing them, but also using dental floss to help prevent gum infections.
