hardly = ไม่เต็มที่, ไม่ค่อย, แทบจะ / เพิ่งจะ
hardly + ever = (ความหมายคล้าย hardly แต่เน้นเทียบความถี่)
hardly ever มีความหมายคล้ายกับ rarely และ seldom


Hardly = only just = barely = scarcely
(มีความหมายว่า เพิ่งจะ.. หรือ แทบจะไม่..)


hardly + any (+ -one/-thing)
(มีความหมายว่าน้อยมาก ๆ ซึ่งมีความหมายเชิงลบ)
ซึ่งมีความหมายตรงข้ามกับ
- plenty of
- loads of




ฉันไม่ค่อยได้กินอาหารเช้าแบบอังกฤษนัก
- I rarely eat a full English breakfast.
- I seldom eat a full English breakfast.
- I hardly ever eat a full English breakfast.
ทั้งสามประโยคนี้มีความหมายเดียวกัน

hardly ever กับ occasionally
hardly ever จะมีความหมายในเชิงลบ
- I hardly ever see my daughter.
She's far too busy to find time for me.
ฉันแทบไม่ได้เจอหน้าลูกสาว เธอยุ่งเกินกว่าที่จะหาเวลาว่างให้ฉัน

occasionally จะมีความหมายในเชิงบวก มากกว่า

Hardly = only just = barely = scarcely
